The Origins of Emo Subcultures and Lifestyles
Emo appears to have originated with the hardcore punk scene of Washington D.C. but with time it has become arduous to define the Emo subculture and genre. Many people who can be perceived as ‘learned’ claim the hardcore punk scene as the originator of Emo. To be more accurate, the ‘Rites of Spring’ are considered the creators of Emo. The band leader expressed his personal feelings to the point of becoming emotional over the subject.
Emo can be nore accurately described as the revolution among the youth with no cause; it’s a way of life to show society that they are not bound by social rules and customs. The performances of ‘Rites of Spring’ sometimes made the public weep as the lyrics and the music were expressively moving and touching, which further served to embed the emo notion in the minds of youth. The Emo genre was the first of its kind and an unfamiliar genre when introduced in 1984. Bands of a similar nature emerged during the 80’s which produced music with themes of self discovery and emotional release.
The Emo hairstyle shows energy and vigor in the wearer. It is hard to get to the true origins of Emo but it is certain that it started in 1984. Authors’ claim that the origin of Emo hardcore music is unknown but it dates back to the 80’s when American teens developed likeness for hardcore emotional expressiveness. There was a popular term ‘emocore’ that was used to refer to a highly emotional and sometimes dangerously emotional state. The reason its origin is mysterious is that it emerged from the underground to rise gradually to a national level. It was in the 90’s that the Emo movement took a turn towards commercialism and started including guitars and pianos, and of course, found expression through the unique Emo hairstyles we see today.
